Why Pensacola Bay is a World-Class Inshore Fishery
Why Pensacola Bay is a World-Class Inshore Fishery
The Pensacola Bay System, including Santa Rosa Sound and Big Lagoon, is a massive highway for baitfish. And where there is bait, there are predators. For anglers looking for action-packed light tackle fishing and a cooler full of fillets, targeting Speckled Trout and Flounder is the ultimate inshore experience.
At Rooster Tail Fishing, we specialize in putting clients on these inshore favorites. Here is what you need to know about targeting the "Big Two" in our local waters.
1. Speckled Trout: The "Yellow Mouth" Prize
Speckled Trout are the most popular inshore gamefish on the Emerald Coast for a reason. They strike hard, they jump, and they are beautiful fish.
The "Gator" Trout: We aren't just looking for small schoolies. Pensacola is home to trophy "Gator" trout—fish over 25 inches that hunt like apex predators. These big females are smart and spooky.
How We Catch Them: We target grass flats (grassbeds) and drop-offs using live shrimp or artificial lures. The key is finding the "potholes" (sandy spots in the grass) where Trout lie in wait.
Night vs. Day: Trout are aggressive visual feeders. On our charters, we focus on moving water (tides) to find where the bait is being pushed. When the tide is moving, the Trout are eating.
2. Flounder: The Ambush Master
Flounder might look funny, but they are aggressive hunters. They bury themselves in the sand and explode upwards to grab passing minnows.
The "Doormats": Everyone wants a doormat (a flounder over 20 inches). These fish hang out around structure—dock pilings, rock piles, and ledges in the bay.
The Technique: Catching Flounder requires patience and a sensitive touch. We slowly drag live bull minnows or jigs along the bottom. The bite can feel like a snag—until the snag starts swimming away.
Eating Quality: There is arguably no better-eating fish in the ocean. Flounder meat is mild, white, and flaky. It’s the ultimate reward for a day on the water.
3. The "Grand Slam" Potential
The best part about fishing inshore in Pensacola is the variety. When we are targeting Trout and Flounder, we are fishing the same waters that hold Redfish (Red Drum) and Sheepshead. It is not uncommon for our clients to hook into an "Inshore Grand Slam" (catching three distinct species) in a single trip.
4. Why Hire a Charter?
You can fish from a pier, but you are limited to the water right in front of you. The fish move constantly based on water temperature, salinity, and tide.
We Chase the Fish: As guides, we are on the water almost every day. We know where the schools are moving.
We Have the Bait: Nothing beats a live well full of feisty shrimp or baitfish. We handle the net throwing and the bait prep so you can focus on casting.
No Gear Hassle: We provide the high-quality light tackle rods and reels perfect for battling these fish.
